MONTREAL – Tony Gallopin earned a tenth place finish in Sunday's Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. A late attack by Lars Petter Nordhaug (Sky) saw the Norwegian rider take his biggest career win on the Avenue du Parc course.
Gallopin: "I had a much better result today than in Québec; here I made the top ten. But in truth we hoped for so much more."
More than five hours of racing on the 205.7km course saw many attacks in the opening laps with the lead changing hands many times before the closing bell lap. Nordhaug took a flyer with just over 4km to go and managed to surge again for the win when Moreno Moser (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Alexandr Kolobnev of Katusha came back to him. His second kick gave him the win by two seconds with Moser and Kolobnev rounding out the podium.
RSNT's Tony Gallopin was tenth with teammate Oliver Zaugg in 15th. Gallopin: "The team did a good job just. In the end it was just Oliver and myself in a group of 25. He did what he had to do but in the end, four riders went away and left the rest of us behind. Today my sprint was the opposite of what I did on Friday when I started too late to pass the others. This time I went too early…but I still have good legs and the season isn't over yet."
Team director Kim Andersen agreed: "The sprint was so close. Tony could have been fifth instead of tenth – they were all together. And the team was good today. They did a good job."
